The Arab Unity Studies Center has published the book Statistics and Politics between the Strength of Evidence and the Influence of Authority by researcher Magued Osman.
This book takes you on a journey into the world of statistics and its intersection with the practice of political work, building bridges between theory and application, and between the practice of statistical work and the pursuit of political work. The book analyzes the interaction between the practice of statistics and the practice of politics, which reaches the point of tension and collision, between the strength of evidence stemming from the practice of statistical work with disciplined methodologies and the power of authority produced by politics. The book presents experiences drawn from more than twenty developed and developing countries. The author has drawn on the experiences of these countries, employing them in the book’s applied topics, including the governance of data and statistical systems and their relationship to public policies and their performance. The book addresses topics rarely addressed in Arabic, especially statistics and good governance, the governance of the statistical system, the relationship between the governance of statistical work and its independence, and the ethical and legal principles governing the relationship between statistics and politics. In his discussion of the statistical aspect, the author avoids going into the mathematical backgrounds of statistics, which makes it easier to follow, especially for the reader who is not specialized in statistics.
