In 2003, the Center for Arab Unity Studies, in cooperation with the Stockholm Institute for International Peace Research – SIPRI, and the Swedish Institute in Alexandria for the third year in a row, have been publishing the Arabic edition of the Book on Armament and International Disarmament, issued annually by the Stockholm Institute for Peace Research, for the fiftieth year in a row. It is a reference yearbook that covers the most prominent developments in matters of armament, armed conflict, factors of tension and loss of security, as well as peace operations and arms control agreements in the world.
This year’s edition deals with global armament and security developments in 2018, examines facts and transformations pertaining to military, security and strategic conflicts, including developments on the arms trade or arms control, and the developments on military and security technologies and the risks facing the world in this regard. Likewise, the book examines the conclusions of new international agreements and previous agreements to limit the use and selling of armaments, as such the book provides a useful reference on armaments and security developments for those interested in military and security affairs, armament and conflict affairs, for researchers, experts, diplomats, leaders and decision makers.
Recent developments in the Arab region and its neighborhood have important ramifications over global and regional events, given the central position of this region in terms of systemic conflicts, intertwined regionally and internationally, in matters of armament, military spending, pivotal polarizations, wars, armed conflicts, terrorism, border and water conflicts, the fragility of security, international external interference on state affairs, environmental and climatic changes and their effects on water and food security, and thus their impact on the level of development in various locations in the region.
The book includes ten chapters, three annexes, as well as an introduction, a preamble and an index.
