Less armed parties resort to tunnel warfare to reduce military and technological superiority gap with their adversaries. The use of tunnels has prominently emerged since the 1970s by nationalist liberation movements, factions, and other non-governmental forces. Palestinian resistance in Gaza has benefited from this tactic to enhance its military capabilities against Zionist occupation. Over the past two decades, Israel has made destroying Palestinian resistance tunnels a primary objective in its comprehensive wars in the Gaza Strip. This study explores tunnel warfare in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict by tracing the historical development of Gaza tunnels, their types, effectiveness, and military operations, and understanding Israeli military strategy towards these tunnels.

The Israeli-imposed siege on the Gaza Strip for years, which constitutes one aspect of the Palestinian people’s suffering, stands out as the most brutal and ruthless tactic. Whether in its direct and long-term motives, particularly after adopting a genocidal approach following the upheaval of Al-Aqsa. Aiming to dismantle the political, economic, social, and cultural structure of the entire Palestinian population in hope of leading them into a state of despair and hopelessness by exacerbating poverty and suffering, thereby disrupting the priorities in the Palestinian collective mindset towards the conflict with the enemy. All of this should be viewed against the backdrop of an international system undergoing profound transformation, shifting towards a multipolar world.

Just War in Arab and Western Thought:

This study emerges within the context of revitalizing theories of just war in both Arab and Western thought, focusing on the Al-Aqsa flood and the genocide inflicted on the Gaza Strip. The study concludes that Western theories regarding just war are relativistic, varying depending on the conflict’s location, suitable for one group of people but not for another. What affirm this is the absence of principles upon which just war theories are based from a Western perspective, which were lacking in Gaza. This absence led these theories to be constructed on a situational basis rather than on humanitarian principles.

The war on Gaza marks a pivotal moment in the history of violent conflicts in the Middle East. For the first time, a genocide of the Palestinian people is happening under the watchful eyes of the international community with absence of any effective intervention by international and regional powers to end the war and halt the hostilities. Despite the UN resolutions issued, Israel continues this war with all forms of killing, torture, starvation, and displacement against the Palestinian people. On the other hand, non-conventional or asymmetrical warfare preceded Israel’s response through the “Al-Aqsa Flood” operation, considering it the first of its kind to terrify Israel for the first time in the history of Arab-Israeli military confrontations.

This paper addresses the developments witnessed by the concept of security in strategic studies, based on the insights of the Egyptian thinker Bahgat Korany, who formulated the concepts of high and low politics. The former is linked to traditional military and security domains, while the latter is associated with social, economic, and cultural spheres, which current historical contexts have highlighted the importance of, particularly for countries described as lagging behind. The study adopts the cultural security model through analyzing the contemporary Arab world’s reality, demonstrating that cultural security plays a fundamental role in securing various other sectors, especially in preserving identity and cultural distinctiveness.

Feminist Literature and the Symbolism of the Private Sphere in Arab Society: A Study of Fatima

This study aims to explore the boundaries shaping the positions of Arab women, which are strongly evident in the private sphere as the primary site for the production of social, moral, and cultural norms that delineate women’s roles in the public sphere. This is achieved through a comparison between the works of Fatima Al-Mernissi and Assia Jabbar. Al-Mernissi’s works focus on what she termed the “harem institution” as a central political, historical, social, and intellectual concept in her works. Regarding Assia Jabbar, this study focuses on the concept of the harem in her writings, highlighting her interest in documenting and recording the oppression women faced during wars and their struggles within it until independence.

The Security and Human Dimensions in Managing Terrorism

Humanitarian thought has sought to study the possibilities of establishing a balance between rights and duties at both individual and collective levels within countries, as well as at regional and international levels. This article addresses the issue of building humanitarian security from the perspective of achieving a balance between measures related to combating terrorism and manifestations of Islamophobia, and respecting human rights, particularly the rights of immigrants and asylum seekers in European countries. This balance, if achieved, would contribute to building humanitarian security between the Mediterranean countries. However, the reality of policies and cooperation among these countries highlights the dominance of security approaches at the expense of rights-based approaches in their conception of ways to build and enhance security in the region.
